Even though we’re all very aware of the importance of sun protection, over-exposure to the sun, leading to sunburn and sun damage is still a prevalent issue. In fact, 95% of melanomas are directly caused by over-exposure to UV radiation, which means they're largely preventable. So how do you prevent sunburn and sun damage?
The old slip, slop, slap, seek and slide is still the way to go. If you're outside in the middle of the day, be extra cautious, as that is when UV levels are most intense. Be aware that every time you are burnt, your chances of developing melanoma are increased. It’s important to know that once your skin starts to turn pink, you’re already beginning to experience sunburn — so make sure you take precautions beforehand. Be sure to cover all exposed areas, including the seven areas people typically forget about when applying sunscreen, and make sure you are following the directions labelled on your sunscreen*.
In case you missed the memo on how to prevent sunburn and sun damage, learn from your mistakes and set a reminder EVERY DAY to apply a broad spectrum SPF. In the meantime, if your skin needs help to ‘chill out’ after over-exposure, the first step is to re-hydrate. During the day and post sun exposure, it’s important to drink plenty of water. A full day out in the sun can be very dehydrating, so up the water intake throughout the day to avoid this.
In addition, have a cool/lukewarm shower. Try to avoid hot showers (although, we know it feels good), as this may irritate your skin even more. The idea is to remove heat from the skin, not add to it!
Afterwards, lather the skin with a hydrating and moisturising lotion, like our After Sun Cooling Lotion. It absorbs quickly while replenishing lost moisture from sun exposure. Use sunscreen liberally on dry skin and reapply according to product directions. Cover all exposed area/s 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every 2 hours or more often when sweating, after swimming and towelling. Avoid prolonged exposure. Sunscreen is only one component of sun protection, it is important to wear protective clothing such as long sleeves, hats and protective eyewear when exposed to the sun.
