Five Tips to Soothe Sensitive Skin in Winter

The drop in temperature that winter brings can wreak havoc on your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin. Together with Skin Cancer and Cosmetic Physician, Dr Scott McGregor, we’ve pulled together five tips to soothe sensitive skin in winter. 

Avoid long hot baths or showers

We know the temptation of running a hot bath or shower after a cold day, but the hot water can strip the skin of its natural protective oils which can lead to further irritation or redness. Opt for lukewarm water instead and keep shower time to a minimum.

Keep your skin hydrated

Use a gentle, fragrance free moisturiser that is formulated specifically for sensitive skin and contains emollients to soothe and hydrate irritated skin. Some great examples of emollients are any type of plant oils/butters such as Cacao Butter, Olive Oil Extract, Coconut Oil and Aloe Vera.

It’s best to apply your moisturiser within a couple of minutes of showering when the skin is still damp to seal in moisture. Use twice daily.

Avoid harsh cleansers

When looking for a cleanser, aim for a gentle cream or oil-based cleanser. Cream based cleansers tend to be more hydrating which is important for sensitive skin, especially in the cooler months. Try to avoid harsh cleansers that contain ingredients that can strip your skin and dry it out, such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and Sodium Laureth Sulphate, which are often found in foaming cleansers. 

SPF everyday

With winter comes cooler and cloudier days, but that doesn’t mean you can ditch the SPF. You should be wearing sunscreen whenever the UV rating is over three, and in most parts of Australia the UV rating is over three all year long. Similar to moisturiser, opt for a gentle, fragrance free SPF formulated specifically for sensitive skin with added emollients. Find one that you feel good about wearing so you want to wear it every day!

Use products specifically designed for sensitive skin 

To reduce skin sensitivity, look for products that are dermatologically tested, clinically proven and suitable for sensitive skin. Choose mild, fragrance free products and to be safe, always start with a patch test when introducing new products. If in doubt, speak with your family doctor.
