The Best Winter Skincare Tips

Environmental factors and seasonal changes can wreak havoc on your skin. So with winter just around the corner in the land down under, it’s important to adjust your skincare routine to ensure your skin stays in tip top shape. Below, we take a look at what you should be doing to care for your skin as the colder months approach.

Don’t ditch the SPF!

With winter comes cooler and cloudier days, but that doesn’t mean you can ditch the SPF. You should be wearing sunscreen whenever the UV rating is over 3, and guess what... the UV rating is over 3 in most parts of Australia all year long.

“Clouds are better at blocking visible light, compared with UV light. In other words, while the light may not shine through, the UV rays still penetrate the clouds and reach our skin”, We Are Feel Good Inc. Co-founder & Skin Cancer Physician, Dr Scott McGregor commented.

“Clouds block as little as 20% of UVA and UVB rays so that’s a whopping 80% still infiltrating the clouds and potentially our skin! It’s the UV rays that are doing the damage. Hence why sunburn on a cloudy day is still common.”

Keep your skin protected with our Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Sunscreen range.

Stay hydrated (on the inside and out).

The combo of inside heating and harsh weather can lead to dehydrated skin so it’s important to keep hydrated, on the inside and out!  We tend to decrease our water intake as the days become a little cooler. According to Health Direct, “As a general rule, men need about 10 cups of fluids every day and women need about 8 cups (add another cup per day if you are pregnant or breastfeeding).”

To keep your skin hydrated, use thick moisturisers that contain emollientsAccording to Dr Scott McGregor “Some great examples of emollients are any type of plant oils/butters such as Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Macadamia Oil and Aloe Vera.” ... and guess what, you'll be able to find each of these emollients mentioned in our range of Body Milks.

Keep your lips protected and hydrated too!

Our lips are often forgotten about when it comes to skincare. Unlike our skin, lips don't have any sebaceous glands to keep them moisturised or any melanin (what causes our skin to tan/burn). Melanin is our body's natural way of protecting our skin from UV rays and without it, they're at a higher risk of burning. So, it's important to use a moisturising lip balm with SPF, like our Cocoa Lip Balm SPF 50+, enriched with Vitamin E, Cocoa Oil, Shea Butter and Omega 3, 6 & 9 for extra hydration and nourishment, plus broad spectrum to give you maximum coverage.
